you should make eye contact and continue the conversation
in French with something like Ça va? .
Don't Take it Personally
You won't always win the rudeness game in France. It helps to keep
your feathers well-oiled so the occasional insult can roll off your back.
No matter how badly you feel you are treated, if you have made
your Bonjour M..., been patient and respectful (with eye contact)
and the waiter or clerk still doesn't respond positively, just relax and
resign yourself. This fellow is having a bad day.
NEVER take it personally. It is not you this person i nds distasteful,
but life itself. Keep reading this topic, keep practising your French.
You are going to learn how to tease that Frenchman into a smile, or
even better, into a good discussion.
For the same reasons, no matter what transpires, or
doesn't, never leave the shop without a Merci , Monsieur
and Au revoir , Madame to these same people. You are
acknowledging them as your 'hosts'. You are in their domain,
their private space, and you must respect the relationship
that exists between you by the mere fact of your being there,
even if you are 'just looking'.
