of individual rights. Yet few noted that all Christian icons
of religious belief have been banned for years from
public schools.
The Muslim population, now the largest minority in France,
is most noticeable in segregated public housing suburbs of
the major cities. Here, riots with buildings and cars ai re in
2005 brought more subsidies, but integration is slow. Even
among the old French, you have to know someone to get
anywhere in the French system, so imagine how tough it is
for the Muslims. Sarkozy, from an immigrant background
himself, appointed the i rst Arab woman to a key government
position. Rachida Dati became Justice Minister in 2007. When
he proposed in 2010 the banning of face covering in public
places, there was great debate. The law was enacted April 15,
2011, but as the
Financial Times
suggested, the law should
have applied only to those forced to wear a veil against their
will. Muslim women are for the most part embracing French
values... and French style. Culture changes slowly (as you are
probably already i nding out).
The young people of France well-integrated, though the education system
offers more opportunities to an elite few.
