Clubs and Sports
Each arrondisement in Paris has its own Mairie or town hall
and there you will find information on all sorts of sporting
activities. But it will be far easier to you to find it on the web,
in English. Refer to our listings of cultural resources above.
You can also use the online 'yellow pages' on the web:
www.pagesjaune.fr to locate things like health clubs ( clubs
de remise en forme ). And if football (soccer) or rugby is
your thing, then the newspaper L'Equipe will keep you up
to date on the schedules. The soccer home team is Paris-
Saint Germain and they play at the Parc des Princes in
the 16eme.
Perhaps the most curious phenomenon in terms of sports
on the streets is still the enormous collection of rouleurs
who don rollerblades every Friday night, join up at the Gare
Montparnasse and roll around Paris. Their route is organised
in advance, the police assist, and you will be made to stand
where you are and wait until they go by… even if you are
on a bicycle!
Shopping
Designer clothes
The French seem to have created fashion, as names like
Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent attest. They
all have headquarters here and many more besides. They
do make for a fascinating, if expensive, shopping spree. The
best places to look are:
Place des Victoires (1er): for designer boutiques.
St Germain des Prés (6eme, 7eme): for very classy
boutiques only a slight step down from above.
Avenue Montaigne (8eme) near boulevards Madeline and
Hausmann
Champs Élysée (8eme, 16eme)
Boulevard Victor Hugo (16eme)
