Meetings in France have a function similar to luncheon
discussions. Members participating are expected to be
critical and discriminating in their observations. Although
they may appear to be putting blame on the chairman's
head, such comments are more an opportunity for the
speaker to exhibit his command and skill in his job. The
chairman will not take honest criticism personally, but he
will listen critically, as all others in the room are expected to
do. So, it will not be your job to defend your boss. He does
not feel threatened. It will be your job, however, to sharpen
up your report to convey your own skills at discerning both
negative and positive aspects of your particular situation. A
sweetened version of the facts will not impress the boss with
your skills. It may be taken as a false compliment. Better
to prepare a sharp, observant report in advance. Answer?

You have established certain shops in your neighbourhood
as your regular stops. One day, when you are in a hurry with
a long shopping list, the lady who sells you cheeses begins
a long explanation of the day's specials and then begins a
story about a pickpocket who was apprehended by an angry
victim on the street corner the previous day. You can see the
story is going to take some time and you don't want to be
held up indefinitely. Do you:
Interrupt the speaker, explain that you are in a hurry, and
ask for your bill?
Let her finish her story and then express regret, followed
immediately by “How much do I owe you?”
Console the lady about the growing violence on the
streets and confirm that active victims get better results
