Montmartre
The tallest hill in Paris affords a great view and the walk up
(or by the open, wheeled train) takes you through the artist
village, popular since the days of Impressionism. At the top
is the Basilica of Sácre Coeur. The martyr after whom the
mountain is named is St Denis, who was beheaded here
around AD 250. He is the patron saint of France. Ironically,
the strip bars of Paris are at the bottom of this hill around
Clichy and Pigalle.
Versailles
Just an hour southwest of Paris, the Palace whose splendor
i nally brought down the Kings of France and brought on the
Revolution. Well worth a visit. You have to see it to believe it.
Easy access by RER line C, by train from Gare Montparnasse
or Gare St Lazare, and by bus 171 from Pont de Sèvres.
Lyon
The third largest city in France, after Paris and Marseille, it is
considered a great center of gastronomy, as well. It also beat
Paris by two years with a successful bicycle rental system
similar to Vélib.
