recalls a much seedier time on the Left Bank when
poor students hung out in grubby smokey cafes with their friends as much
to stay warm as to polish their conversational skills. The tradition remains,
though real estate prices have soared. A sunny day (or just not pouring rain) at
any temperature draws the French to outside tables to smoke (now forbidden
inside) and discuss everyone's favorite subject: politics. (Never business!)
