Starting Conversations With Strangers
French conversation in public among strangers is usually
limited to exchanges between customers and shopkeepers.
To go into a café and start talking to another customer
could easily be an invasion of his or her privacy, or even
misunderstood as a proposition on your part.
Conversation commits people. So make your advances
gingerly. You'll i nd plenty of seemingly 'non-communicative'
French people happy to talk to
you, with the proper approach.
The French are most at ease
when they are in conversation.
They love to express their
opinions. They just need the appropriate opportunity to
get started.
Your best bet at a bar or in a café or shop is to wait until
other customers have been presented to you through the
waiter, bartender or clerk. If you are with a group, or they
are, that makes your advances easier, as your motives are
clearly innocent.
'Everything can be seen
from several angles and in
several lights.'
—Montaigne
