La Fête des Rois (Epiphany)
Epiphany was originally a religious festival celebrating
the visit of the Magi to Jesus. Today, the popular custom
is to hide a small i gurine inside a cake ( galette des rois ).
The cake is then cut into pieces and distributed among
the members of the family. The person with the i gurine
in his piece will be king or queen for the day. Galettes des
rois can be found in boulangeries throughout the week of
the festival.
February
Mardi Gras
Also known as Carnaval, the celebrations vary depending
upon which part of France you visit. In several cities, such
as Dunkerque, the traditional costume parade is still held.
March
Foire du Trône
A temporary fairground is set up in the Bois de Vincennes
in Paris, with rides and activities for children.
End of April
La Foire Internationale de Paris
A large week-long fair held in Porte de Versailles, with
vendors selling everything from furniture to food.
May
French Open Tennis Championship
Also known as Roland Garros, this is the event that has the
biggest names in professional tennis come to Paris each
year to compete. It's the only major tennis championship
held on clay courts.
