In-Depth Information
In France, everyone fl irts. You don't have to mean it.
Flirting in France is a celebration, almost an art form.
(Actual sexual climax, on the contrary, is called la petite
morte , or the small death.) While the family is very important,
life outside the conventions of marriage is allowed. A good
example is the recent candidate for President, Mme. Royal.
She has four children and never married their father.
'Polygamy is the opposite of monotony' goes the French
saying and monotony is to be avoided at all costs, as we
know from Mademoiselle Chanel. Marriage and the family
are quite strong institutions in France, well dei ned both by
the Roman Catholic Church and the Napoleonic Code.
Marriage involves many more economic expectations but
fewer personal ones. Such life partners are not joined at the
hip and each has his own interests. Most of the time, they
share the pleasures and the responsibilities of their children
and their extended families.
