Vins Rouges (Red Wines)
Bordeaux
Bourgogne
Beaujolais
Côtes du Rhone
Aude
Vin de la Maison
The Vin de la Maison in each category is the simplest, the
house wine, and usually the least expensive of the selections.
It is usually available by the quarter, half or full carafe—a
full carafe being a litre container, more than one person can
safely drink in a sitting.
Everything else on the list is the name of a place in France.
Once you get to know the basic regional wines and learn
the differences between a light red such as a Beaujolais
and a heavy red such as a Côtes du Rhone, you'll have
enough command to read a wine list in any but the most
intimidating establishments. You can always ask the waiter
for his suggestion. He'll be happy to provide it.
