You can use your CB card at restaurants and retailers, as
well as cash machines, simply by tapping in your 4-digit
PIN. (Be sure no one watches you do it.) Your foreign credit
card will be more cumbersome at retailers, as it has to be
scanned in and your signature collected. Be sure to tell you
credit card service at home that you will using your card in
France before you leave home.
Some bank accounts, especially at the post ofi ce, limit the
number of withdrawals you can make in a week, and some
machines charge for withdrawals. Some savings accounts, like
the Postépargne, offer both cheque writing and cash cards.
Many people in France have their salaries deposited
directly into their bank accounts and their monthly bills, like
EGF, telephone, etc., are deducted automatically. Automatic
deductions are postponed until you have had ample warning,
by mail. They are an easy way to get your monthly money
chores done.
It is a major faux pas and a serious crime to overdraw a
checking account in France. Thus, French cheques are readily
accepted everywhere, often without a piece of identii cation,
making a French account a very convenient thing to have.
Even McDonald's doesn't stay open 24 hours in France, but they offer free,
unlimited wifi .
