In-Depth Information
The minimum temperature ( T MIN ), the maximum temperature ( T MAX ), and the
optimum temperature ( T OPT ) depend on the ontogenetical stage of the cultivation,
but the structure of the partial rate function is unchanged with the stage (de Morais
2004 ).
It is known by electromagnetism (Jackson 1999 ) that the quantity of received
radiation follows an inverse square law of the distance from the source, in this case
the Sun, to the object. So, by a simple calculation, it is shown that Mars' surface
receives 0.4 Q P of the one at Earth's surface. Such calculation is achieved by the
following equations (de Morais 2004 ):

Q S D Half photosaturation constant ((kJ)/(m 2 d))
x 1 D Curving exponent to determine the influence of radiation on photosynthesis
x 2 D Combining exponent to determine the influence of radiation on photosynthesis
r Q D Partial photosynthetic radiation rate
R ph D Specific internal temperature function - describes the influence of tempera-
ture on ontogenesis
T COR D Correction of optimum temperature ((m 2 d)/(kJK))
T L D Mean temperature during light period ( ı C)
T MIN D Minimal temperature for cultivation development, depends on the ontoge-
netical stage ( ı C)
T MAX D Maximal temperature for cultivation development, depends on the ontoge-
netical stage ( ı C)
T OPT D Optimal temperature for cultivation development, depends on the ontoge-
netical stage ( ı C)
r T D Partial photosynthetic rate by the influence of the phototemperature
Taking the influence of temperature ( r T ) into the photosynthetic assimilation
process, then the photosynthetic productivity on Mars will be below 0.4 r Q , showing
that although the organisms for cultivation will display a much lower metabolism,
