Fig. 5.16 Latitude-longitude maps of TEC ( upper panel )andǛ ( lower panel ). Ǜ is the angle
between the ambient magnetic field vector of internal origin and the local vertical direction. Yellow-
dashed ( red dotted ) lines highlight quasi-vertical ( horizontal ) field (Reproduced from Cartacci
et al. 2012 )
Ganymede is the largest satellite in the solar system. It is known to have a deep
ocean, an internal dynamo, and an induced magnetic field which makes it unique
among Jupiter icy moons, and it is the richest in crater morphologies. It is an
archetype of water worlds, and it is the best example of liquid environment trapped
between icy layers.
Callisto is the best place to study the impactor history. It is the only known
example of non-active but ocean-bearing world, and it is the witness of early ages.
Europa has a deep ocean and Juice will investigate if it is an active world. It is
also the best example of liquid environment in contact with silicates.
RIME mission will be focused on subsurface exploration of Jupiter icy moons.
It is based on a solid heritage from successful radar sounders operating at Mars.
RIME will address the following JUICE mission goals: characterize Ganymede as
a planetary object and possible habitat, explore Europa's recently active zones, and
study Callisto as a remnant of the early Jovian system.
