Figure 21-2. The Windows services screen
This screen shows the name of the various services on the left side. Note the service names related to Oracle;
they all start with the word Oracle . In particular, note the service OracleServiceMOBDB11, which is the service for
the database instance named MOBDB11. When you install Oracle, this service is created, and the start-up property
is set to Automatic; that is, the service starts automatically when Windows starts. This functionally is similar to the
placement of files in the /etc/init.d directory in Unix. You may decide to change it so you have to start it manually.
To change the start-up option to Manual, right-click the service name, and choose Properties. In the dialog box that
appears, choose Manual from the Startup Type drop-down list, and click the button Apply.
Another way to check the service name command is to use the SC command. Here is how you can check the
database service:
C:\>sc query OracleServiceMOBDB11
This returns with the following output, which shows the status of the service:
SERVICE_NAME: OracleServiceMOBDB11
TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE,PAUSABLE,ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
