exacerbate these costs. Also, car dependence is
increasingly manifested in cases of localised rural
traffic congestion, for example in countryside
recreation sites in summer (Cullinane et al . 1996).

GUIDE TO FURTHER READING
As far as the UK is concerned, the only full-length
topic on this subject from a geographical viewpoint
is still Moseley (1979) and, although the social and
policy contexts are outdated, the concepts and
techniques described remain valid. Although
shorter, a reasonably comprehensive and up-to-date
coverage can be found in Nutley (1992; 1998).
Note that the first edition (1992) concentrates on
the UK and has more detail on accessibility, while
the second edition (1998) is more international in
scope but has less on methodology. For specific
detail on techniques, readers should consult some
of the case studies already cited, especially Moseley
et al . (1977), Nutley (1983; 1984; 1985), and Nutley
andThomas (1992).
Information on other countries is rather scarce
and fragmented. For the United States, a review of
relevant literature is in Nutley (1996), while the
most useful book-length treatment is Due et al .
(1990). The latter takes a mode-by-mode
approach, concentrating on policy and economic
issues, principally the effects of deregulation. Rural
transport in the developing world is a vitally
important problem, only recently given the
recognition it deserves. The most useful topic on
the subject is Barwell et al . (1985), which
comprises a valuable series of case studies from
Africa and Asia. Otherwise, up-to-date and
concise synopses can be derived from 'rural'
chapters in Hilling (1996) and Simon (1996).
