Box 13.1 The natural resource crisis in Yemen
The southwestern Arabian peninsula has long been home
to farmers who lived in isolated villages and relied on a
relatively rich natural resource base of fertile volcanic soils,
a normally adequate wet season rainfalland well-wooded
slopes to sustain their rural production systems. Linked to
these villages by paths and camel trails were large
highland cities, e.g. San'a' and Tai'zz (Figure 13.1)
