FIGURE 4.10
Chemical structure of the malonate ion.
SUMMARY
The concept of stereochemistry and isomers in organic chemistry is presented
leading to an introduction to isomers of double bonds. The chapter describes the
core building blocks and pathways for natural products including the isoprene rule,
shikimic acid as a precursor to aromatic compounds, mevalonate as a precursor to
terpenoids, and polyketides as a precursor to alkaloids.
QUESTIONS
1. There are two types of metabolites. What are they?
2. Give an example of each type of metabolite.
3. Give two examples each of molecules derived from (a) isoprenes, (b) shiki-
mate, (c) mevalonate, (d) polyketide, and (e) malonate pathways.
