FIGURE 10.15
Structure of a bryostatin from marine sources.
SUMMARY
This chapter provides various important natural product contributors to human
health: the terpene-related monacolin compounds and the steroids, including corti-
sone and progesterone. Various natural product examples from terrestrial, microbial,
and marine sources are provided: the antimalarial quinine and artemisinin; and the
anticancer compounds paclitaxel and bryostatin.
QUESTIONS
1. Artemisinin is a complex oxygenated terpene. Describe the types of oxygen
bonds in the molecule.
2. What is the best approach to determine the dioxygen bridge structure in the
artemisinin molecule?
