This option applies
when you're creating
a drawing that's on
several working layers.
When checked, a layer
automatically becomes
editable when you click
its name on the Object
gallery. If the layer
is locked, this option
allows the layer to
automatically become
unlocked without the
need to click a check box.

Using this
option is a matter of personal preference. If you want
all the text you type to be the same justification, point
size, and typeface, check this box. On the other hand, if
you intend to create a variety of shapes, all with unique
colors, you might not want this option.
You can also save layers, font styles, and other preferences to a template. For example, if you
want to begin a new document based on a template with Garamond 14 pt, center justification, as
the default font, you choose the Type Tool, set these parameters on the Infobar, and then save the
document by using File | Save Template. Similarly, you can create a template that has three or four layers to
start with, or begin documents with orange shapes with 4-pt green outlines. You specify these attributes—
you don't need to actually create a shape with these attributes—and then save the document as a template.
