Genus
Sotalia
Gray 1866
Sotalia
was described to accommodate a marine species from the South American
continent, originally attributed to
Delphinus
(
Delphinus guianensis
). In the same year, Gray
proposed the
Sotalia
sub-genus
Tucuxa
for a riverine species from the Amazon (
Steno
tucuxi
): that species was later relocated to
Sotalia
by Flower (1883). Also in 1866, Gray
described the sub-genus
Sousa,
using
Steno lentiginosus
(later synonymized with
Sousa
