vince the Hero to change his mind.
In Star Wars , Luke meets with Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi when the old Jedi
rescues him in the Tatooine desert and takes him to his secluded home.
There Ben tells Luke about Luke's family legacy, bestows a lightsaber on
him, and asks Luke to help him rescue Princess Leia.
In Uncharted 2 , the scene in the jail cell also constitutes the Meeting
with the Mentor, as Sully—after giving Nate the gift of freedom by bribing
the local police—helps convince him to join the quest.
5. Crossing the First Threshold
Identical to Plot Point 1 in the Three-Act Structure, this is the point at
which the Hero finally commits to taking on the quest, and begins her
journey to resolve the main conflict. From this moment forward it's usually
made clear there is no going back, and at this point the story finally kicks
into gear. At this crucial juncture, the audience has been primed with all
the setup material it needs to understand what's at stake and to care about
the characters involved … it's now “go time.”
The Hero is entering unfamiliar territory—leaving the Ordinary World be-
hind and entering what's known as the Special World . Here she will remain
until she's resolved the conflict.
In Star Wars , this is the point at which Luke finds that his foster parents
have been killed by Stormtroopers. He agrees to go with Ben Kenobi to Al-
deraan and help rescue Princess Leia.
In Uncharted 2 , this step also occurs in the jail cell scene, as Nate finally
agrees to join Sully and Chloe in their quest to beat Lazarevic to the
Cintamani Stone. They all head to Borneo.
6. Tests, Allies, Enemies
This is the initial rising action described in Act II of the Three-Act Structure.
The Hero encounters a series of increasingly challenging tests, while get-
ting oriented to the Special World. Along the way he makes new friends
and runs afoul of new enemies.
In Star Wars , this phase includes a number of events:
The landspeeder scene in which Ben Kenobi uses a Jedi mind trick
to get past the suspicious Stormtroopers
