In-Depth Information
Season One is ultimately about keeping one little girl safe. And Mr. Mos-
quito is about keeping a single mosquito fed!
The stakes don't even have to be life or death, necessarily. Just very im-
portant to a character we, as the audience, have become emotionally at-
tached to.
So remember—always have conflict. And only make the scope of the
conflict as large as it needs to be, no larger.
Final Thoughts on Conflict
Without fuel, a car engine will sputter and grind to a halt. And it's the same
with stories. But stories don't come with gauges or warning lights to indic-
ate a fuel problem, so it's up to you, the storyteller, to always be mindful of
a story's constant need for conflicts that the characters are challenged to
resolve.
Conflict is the very core of story, its beating heart. I really can't emphas-
ize this enough. In fact, if you were to come away with only one lasting
lesson from this entire topic, I would hope it to be: “story is conlict.”
