veins (€15-22 plates, good indoor and outdoor seating, daily 12:00-late, Leibnizstrasse near

Dicke Wirtin
is a pub with traditional old-Berlin
Kneipe
atmosphere, six good beers
on tap, and solid home cooking at reasonable prices—such as their famously cheap
Gu-
laschsuppe
(€4).Theirinteriorisfunandpubby,withsoccerontheTV;theirstreetsidetables
are also inviting. Pickled eggs are on the bar—ask about how these can help you avoid a
hangover (€5 daily specials, Bavarian Andechs beer on tap, open daily from 12:00, dinner
served from 18:00, just off Savignyplatz at Carmerstrasse 9, tel. 030/312-4952).
Weyers
offers modern German cuisine in a simple, elegant setting, with dining tables in
the summer spilling out into the idyllic neighborhood park in front (€5-10 starters, €10-16
main plates, daily 8:00-24:00, facing Ludwigkirchplatz at corner of Pariser Strasse and
Pfalzburger Strasse, tel. 030/881-9378).
Café Literaturhaus
is a neighborhood favorite for a light meal, sandwich, or dessert. It
has the ambience of an Old World villa with a big garden perfect for their evening poetry
readings (€5-15 meals, daily 9:30-24:00, Fasanenstrasse 23, tel. 030/882-5414).
Die Zwölf Apostel
(“The Twelve Apostles”) is popular for good Italian food. Choose
between indoors with candlelit ambience, outdoors on a sun-dappled patio, or overlooking
the people-parade on its pedestrian street. A local crowd packs this restaurant for €12 pizzas
and €15-20 meals (long hours daily, cash only, immediately across from Savignyplatz S-
Bahn entrance, Bleibtreustrasse 49, tel. 030/312-1433).

al Berlin specialties in the garden or in the rustic candlelit interior. Their
Berliner Aller-
lei
is a fun way to sample a bit of nearly everything (cabbage, pork, sausage, potatoes and
more for a minimum of two people...but it can feed up to five). They have their own mi-
crobrew (€10 meals, daily 10:00-24:00, near the S-Bahn tracks at Bleibtreustrasse 48A, tel.
030/881-7040).
Technical University Mensa
puts you in a thriving, modern student scene. It feels like
a student union building (because it is), with shops, a travel agency, a lounge, kids mak-
ing out, and lots of international students to chat with. The main cafeteria
(Mensa)
is up-
stairs—bustling with students and lots of eating options. Streetside is a cafeteria with a
more limited selection. Even with the non-student surcharge, eating here is very cheap (€3-5
meals, Mon-Fri 11:00-14:30, closed Sat-Sun, general public entirely welcome but pays the
highest of the three prices, coffee bar downstairs with Internet access, just north of Uhland-
strasse at Hardenbergstrasse 34).
Supermarket:
The neighborhood grocery store is
Ullrich
(Mon-Sat 9:00-22:00, Sun
11:00-22:00, Kantstrasse 7, under the tracks near Bahnhof Zoo). There's plenty of fast food
near Bahnhof Zoo and on Ku'damm.
