In-Depth Information
ger Strasse is a fun zone to explore; I've listed two places on this street that I particularly
like. KaufDichGlücklich makesagreatcappertoaPrenzlauerBergdinner.Itservesanen-
ticing array of sweet Belgian waffles and ice cream in a candy-sprinkled, bohemian lounge
on a great Prenzlauer Berg street (daily 11:00-24:00, indoor and outdoor seating—or get

Fleischmöbel (“Meat Furniture”) is a fun place to drink with locals, despite the lack of
beer on tap. Here you'll find strong cocktails, cool classic rock, and a big blackboard. It's a
bit hipster-pretentious, but offers a good glimpse into the Prenzlauer Berg lifestyle. Its two

on warm evenings, tables fill the sidewalk out front (daily 12:00 until “whenever,” Oderber-
ger Strasse 2).
Near Kollwitzplatz
(See “Eastern Berlin Eateries & Nightlife” map, here .)
This square, home of the DDR student resistance in 1980s, is now trendy and upscale, pop-
ular with hip parents who take their hip kids to the leafy playground park at its center. It's
an especially good area to prowl among upmarket restaurants—walk the square and choose.
Just about every option offers sidewalk seats in the summer (great on a balmy evening). It's
a long block up Kollwitzstrasse from U2: Senefelderplatz.
Gugelhof, right on Kollwitzplatz, is an institution famous for its Alsatian German
cuisine. You'll enjoy French quality with German proportions. It's highly regarded, with
a boisterous and enthusiastic local crowd filling its minimalist yet classy interior. In good
weather, outdoor seating sprawls along its sidewalk. Their fixed-price meals are fun, and
they welcome swapping (€20-30 three-course meal, €5-10 starters, €12-20 main dishes,
Mon-Fri 16:00-24:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-24:00, reservations required during peak times, where
Knaackstrasse meets Kollwitzplatz, tel. 030/442-9229).
Near Rosenthaler Platz, Closer to Hackescher Markt
(See “Eastern Berlin Eateries & Nightlife” map, here .)
Surrounding the U8: Rosenthaler Platz station, a short stroll or tram ride from the Hackes-
cher Markt S-Bahn station, and an easy walk from the Oranienburger Strasse action, this
busy neighborhood has a few enticing options.
Luigi Zuckermann is a trendy young deli with Israeli/New York style. It's a great spot
to pick up a custom-made deli sandwich (choose your ingredients at the deli counter), hum-
mus plate, salad, fresh-squeezed juice, or other quick, healthy lunch. Linger in the interior,
