$ easyHotel Berlin Hackescher Markt is part of an unapologetically cheap Europe-
wide chain where you pay for exactly what you use—nothing more, nothing less. Based
on parent company easyJet's sales model of nickel-and-dime air travel, the hotel has inex-
pensive base rates (small Db-€25-65, larger Db-€35-65, prices vary by season, it's cheaper
to book earlier), then charges you separately for optional extras (breakfast, Wi-Fi, using
the TV, and so on). The 125 orange-and-gray rooms are very small, basic, and feel popped
out of a plastic mold, but if you skip the extras, the price is right, and the location—at the
Hackescher Markt end of Prenzlauer Berg—is wonderful (air-con, elevator, after booking

Near Oranienburger Strasse: $$$ Hotel Augustinenhof is a clean hotel with 66 spa-
cious rooms, nice woody floors, and some of the most comfortable beds in Berlin. While
not exactly in Prenzlauer Berg, the hotel is on a side street near all of the Oranienburger
Strasse action. Rooms in front overlook the courtyard of the old Imperial Post Office, rooms
in back are a bit quieter, and all rooms have old, thin windows (official rates: Sb-€119, Db-

Hostels in Eastern Berlin
Berlin is known among budget travelers for its fun, hip hostels. These range from upscale-
feelinghostelswithsomehotelesqueprivateroomscomfortableenoughevenfornon-hostel-
ers, to more truly backpacker-type places where comfort is secondary to socializing. These
are scattered around eastern Berlin, including some (Circus, Meininger, and EastSeven) in
the Prenzlauer Berg area just described.
