Beer Gardens (Biergartens)

Rothenburg's Biergarten scanbegreatfun,butthey'reopenonlywhentheweatherisbalmy.
UnterdenLinden, afamily-friendly(withsandboxandswing),slightlybohemian Bier-
garten in the valley along the river, is worth the 20-minute hike on a pleasant evening (daily

Sunday breakfast buffet until noon-€12, call first to confirm it's open, Kurze Steige 7, tel.

it's at the bottom of the hill on the left.
Gasthof Rödertor, just outside the wall through the Rödertor, runs a backyard Bier-
garten that's great for a rowdy crowd looking for cheap food and good beer. Their passion
is potatoes—the menu is dedicated to spud cuisine. Try a plate of Schupfnudeln —potato
noodles with sauerkraut and bacon (May-Sept daily 17:00-24:00 in good weather, table ser-
vice only—no ordering at counter, Ansbacher Strasse 7, look for wooden gate, tel. 09861/
2022). If the Biergarten is closed, their indoor restaurant, with more extensive menu, is a
good value (€7-13 main courses, daily 11:30-14:00 & 17:30-22:00 except Sun until 21:00).
Eisenhut Restaurant (described earlier), behind the fancy hotel of the same name on
Herrngasse, has a gentle, casual, small Biergarten out back, with lower prices than the res-
taurant.

off Market Square at Hafengasse 17, run by Paolo and Paola D'Isep).
