The Liceu Opera House (Gran Teatre del Liceu), right on the heart of the Ramblas, is a
pre-Modernista, sumptuous venue for opera, dance, children's theater, and concerts (tickets

Some of Barcelona's top sights—including Casa Milà , CaixaForum, and Fundació

Touristy Performances of Spanish Clichés
Two famously Spanish types of music—flamenco and Spanish guitar—have little to do with
Barcelona or Catalunya, but are performed to keep visitors happy. If you're headed for other
partsofSpainwherethesemusicalformsaremoretypical(suchasAndalucíaforflamenco),
you might as well wait until you can experience the real deal. But if this is your best chance
to see these types of performances, here are some options.
Flamenco: Tarantos, on Plaça Reial in the heart of the Barri Gòtic, puts on cheap, brief
(30 minutes), riveting flamenco performances several times nightly. While flamenco is for-
eigntoCatalunya(localssaythatit'slikegoingtoseecountrymusicinBoston),thisisafun
and easy way to enjoy it. Performances are in a touristy little bar/theater with about 50 seats
andreliablygood-qualityperformers(€8,nightlyat20:30,21:30,and22:30;inJuly-Augex-

en/tarantos ). It's right on Plaça Reial, so it's easy to drop by and get tickets.
Spanish Guitar: “Masters of Guitar” concerts are offered nearly nightly at 21:00 in the
Barri Gòtic's Church of Santa Maria del Pi (€21 at the door, €3 less if you buy at least
3 hours ahead—look for ticket-sellers in front of church and scattered around town, Plaça
del Pi 7; sometimes in Sant Jaume Church instead, Carrer de Ferran 28; tel. 647-514-513,
www.maestrosdelaguitarra.com ). The same company also does occasional concerts in the
Palace of Catalan Music (€25-29).
