Casa de l'Ardiaca (Archivo): It's free to enter this mansion, which was once the
archdeacon'shouseandtodayfunctionsasthecityarchives.Theelaboratelycarveddoorway
is Renaissance. To the right of the doorway is a carved mail slot by 19th-century Modern-
ist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Enter through a small courtyard with a fountain.
Notice how the century-old palm tree seems to be held captive by urban man. Next, step in-
side the lobby of the city archives. You can't tour the archives, but there are often temporary
exhibits in the lobby. At the left end of the lobby, step through the archway and look down
into the stairwell—this is the back side of the ancient Roman wall. Back in the courtyard,
head up to the balcony for views of the cathedral steeple and gargoyles.
