During hunting season, a blaze orange sheet identifies Zinger as a horse, not an
elk—we hope.
Power poles and guy wires are hazards. Cover guy wires with visible plastic tubes;
these are often available from the local power company.
Parasite reinfestation. Horses shed parasite eggs in their feces, the eggs hatch, and the
larvae crawl up grass stems and are ingested by the horse, resulting in constant reinfesta-
tion.
Undesirable plants. Many pasture plants, trees, and shrubs are poisonous to horses. Oth-
ers can trigger a photosensitive reaction that causes unpigmented areas to become red,
thickened, and scaly.
Insects. Pastures usually have more insects than do buildings, and the pests are more
difficult to control because breeding grounds are near water, in tall grass, and in wooded
