overhang.
Commonly refers to the roof portion that extends past the exterior wall; it
is often enclosed by a
soffit.
overhead service.
An electrical service where the conductors are brought to a building
on poles overhead.
paddock.
A grassy area of approximately ΒΌ to 1 acre that is designed to provide exer-
cise as well as some grazing.
panel stall.
A freestanding stall consisting of completed wall panels that bolt together.
parasite.
A plant or animal that lives in (internal parasite) or on (external parasite) an-
other. Internal parasites include bloodworms (strongyles), roundworms (ascarids),
pinworms
(Oxyuris equi)
, and bots
(Gasterophilus).
External parasites include lice
and ticks.
partition wall.
A wall that has no structural function and is installed to divide space.
pasture.
A grassy area usually larger than 1 acre that is designed and maintained
primarily to provide grazing.
pen.
A non-grassy area that is designed primarily for outdoor living quarters for
horses.
pitch.
The ratio of the vertical rise of a roof to the total span, expressed as a fraction.
For example, if the rise of a roof is 4 feet and the span is 24 feet, the roof has a pitch
of 1/6 (4/24).
plot plan
(site plan). A drawing showing a complete property, indicating the location
of buildings, driveways, easements, and natural formations.
plumb.
Vertically straight.
pole barn.
A roof structure supported on wooden columns (poles).
post
(column). A vertical structural component that is typically used to support a
girder or other beam.
post and beam.
Type of wall framing that uses posts that carry horizontal beams on
which joists are supported; it allows for fewer bearing partitions and less material.
power.
Watts, a measurement of the rate at which electrical energy is used; watts =
volts x amps.
pressure-treated.
Wood that has had chemical preservatives forced into it under pres-
sure to protect it from insects and decay.
purlin.
A horizontal member between trusses to which roofing is attached.
PVC.
Polyvinyl chloride; a rigid white or cream-colored plastic.
rafter.
A sloping roof member that extends from the ridge of the roof to the eaves and
supports the roof covering.
RCA.
Raised center aisle; a barn with a
monitor roof.
ridge
(peak). The top of a roof where two slopes meet; the highest point of a roof.
right-of-way.
A strip of land granted by deed or easement for the construction and
maintenance of utility lines, roadways, and driveways.
