gambrel roof. A roof having two slopes on each side of the ridge, with the lower slope
steeper than the upper.
general contractor. An individual who undertakes or oversees a building project.
geotextile. See landscape fabric.
GFCI (GFI). Ground fault circuit interrupter; outlet or breaker that safeguards against
shocks by shutting off electricity.
girder. A heavy beam of steel or wood that serves as a horizontal support and typically
supports smaller members such as joists.
grade. Surface level of the ground.
grade of roofing. Grades A, B, and C are approved fire-rating roofs.
grading. The leveling and shaping of the ground.
gray water. Wastewater not containing toilet or food waste.
grill (grillwork). A steel grating used as a barrier to protect windows and as the top
portion of stall walls and doors.
ground. A circuit wire that is connected to the earth, usually by means of a ground
rod.
ground fault. See short circuit.
ground rod (grounding rod). A rod, usually 8 feet long and copper, driven completely
into the earth and used to ground an electrical panel.
gutter (eaves gutter, eaves trough). A long, shallow trough installed under and parallel
to the eaves in order to catch and direct water dripping from a roof.
halogen (quartz halogen). A bright, long-lasting light that uses a tungsten filament in
a clear quartz tube filled with halogen gas.
horseshoer. One who shoes horses; farrier.
hot. The circuit wire that brings in the electrical current flow.
humus. The dark, uniform, finely textured, odorless product of the decomposition of
organic matter; the end product of composting.
ID. Abbreviation for inside diameter; pipes are sized according to their inside diamet-
er. Also abbreviation for identification.
insulation. Material that minimizes heat transfer through the walls, floors, and ceil-
ings.
junction box (electrical box). A square, octagonal, or rectangular plastic or metal
box open on one face that fastens to framing and houses wires, receptacles, and
switches.
lameness. Pain or physical defect that interferes with normal movement, evidenced by
varying degrees of limping.
laminated. Fabricated in layers that are glued or bonded together.
laminitis. Inflammation of the hoof causing severe lameness.
