eutrophication. The process whereby excess nutrients in water cause excessive and
unhealthy algae growth.
expansion joints. Lines cut into a concrete surface to allow for expansion and contrac-
tion. If the slab cracks, it will do so only along these lines.
farrier. See horseshoer.
fiberglass. Fine filaments of glass made into a fibrous insulating material or molded
into a solid material for use as a translucent panel and other items.
finish grade. Surface elevation of lawn, driveway, or other improved surfaces after
completion of grading operations.
firewall. A fire-resistant wall used to restrict or prevent the spread of fire between por-
tions of a building.
fixture. Any permanently connected electrical or plumbing device.
flooring. Any material installed on the floor of a barn, such as rubber mats and wood
plank.
floor plan. A drawing, a horizontal section, showing the arrangement of rooms, walls,
partitions, doors, and windows and giving dimensions, names, and other informa-
tion.
footing. The surface material on which a horse is worked or ridden; also, concrete pad
used under a post or foundation wall to bear weight.
forced air. A mechanical warm-air system that uses a blower to increase the flow of
heated air to specific areas.
foundation. Comprises the supporting building components that contact the soil, such
as footing, piles, and caissons.
4WD. Four-wheel drive; a vehicle with power delivered to all four wheels; 4x4.
founder. See laminitis.
framing. The framework of a building, consisting of beams, columns, joists, rafters,
etc.; the making of such a framework.
free span. See clear span.
French drain. A gravel-filled trench, sometimes containing a drainpipe at the bottom,
used to disperse excess surface water into the ground.
frost line. The maximum depth to which the ground freezes in the winter.
FRP. Fiber-reinforced plastic.
fuse. A protective device containing a thin wire that melts when it exceeds a specified
value to interrupt the flow of current. A fuse cannot be reset and must be replaced
after use.
gable. The end wall of a building having a triangular shape formed by a single sloped
roof on either side of a ridge.
gable roof. A simple triangular-shaped roof having two slopes.
galvanized. Coated with zinc to prevent corrosion.
