Glossary
access panel. An opening in the wall or ceiling near a fixture for service access.
air change. The amount of fresh air required per hour to replace stale air in a given
space.
ambient lighting. General illumination in a room, with no single, visible source of light.
arena. A fenced area for working horses; usually rectangular.
asphalt. A black mineral used in roof coverings and paving.
backhoe. Excavation machine that digs by pulling a boommounted bucket toward itself.
Used to dig footings and trenches.
beam. Any large structural member used to support a load over an opening or from post
to post.
bedding. Soft, absorbent material used to cover the floor of a stall.
berm. A small earthen embankment usually used for diverting runoff water.
board-and-batten siding. Wide vertical boards installed close together, with gaps
between covered by narrow boards or strips (battens).
bots. The larvae of several species of bot fly (Gasterophilus).
bracing. Boards, metal rods, and strips used for strengthening a building or as tempor-
ary supports.
brand. A mark made on the hide of an animal by a hot or freezing iron to designate
ownership.
breaker. A switchlike device that connects and disconnects power to a circuit.
breezeway. A center-aisle barn with a large door on each end of the aisle.
broom finish. The texture created when a stiff broom is pulled across the surface of a
concrete slab before it has set.
building code. A set of safety standards that contains rules necessary for accepted safe
building practices.
building permit. An authorized form that allows someone to legally construct or remod-
el a building.
building standards. Guidelines that detail the minimum design or the performance of a
specific material.
cement. A powdered material composed mainly of limestone and sand. When mixed
with water, it hardens and binds other materials, such as sand and gravel in concrete.
circuit. A continuous loop of current.
