Turning Loose
If a horse jerks away, wheels, and kicks as you are turning him loose, you could get hurt.
Make turning loose a lesson. If necessary, take a walk in the pasture for a minute or so.
Take your time. Don't encourage your horse to anticipate turnout by letting him go as soon
as you walk through the pasture gate.
Before you unhalter, drop a few treats on the ground in front of the horse. Then make
a loop with the lead rope around the horse's neck, remove the halter, and release the loop.
Walk away. The horse will drop his nose and stretch his back to look for the treats; he will
