FEEDING A HORSE ON PASTURE
Horses need supplemental feed when the pasture starts waning and during winter turnout.
When feeding a single horse on pasture, the same rules and manners apply as would be
required when feeding the horse in a stall or pen. No pushing, crowding, or aggressive be-
havior allowed. Decide how much personal space you need when carrying feed and placing
it on the ground or in feeders. Then require that the horse stay out of that area until you
give him the command OK as you leave the feed and walk away.
It is more difficult to safely feed a group of horses while you are on foot due to natural
competition at feeding time. A pickup truck or a utility vehicle will help you carry the feed
and can be pretty slick if one person drives while another throws out the feed. If you are
feeding one or two horses and must transport the hay on foot, a homemade or commercial
hay carrier will make the job easier and neater for you.
