Summer Task: Caring for a Horse on Pasture
When turning out a horse to full-time pasture, let him get used to the radical change from
dry feed to green feed over a period of 2 to 3 weeks. Some horses are prone to colic or
laminitis when pastured, so it's best to turn out horses when the pasture grasses are ma-
ture. Give the horse a full feed of hay just before you turn him out. Limit his grazing to 30
minutes per day and gradually work up to being out on pasture full time. If a horse has been
off pasture for a week or more, take a couple of days to reintroduce him to the green feed.
Horses actively seek the company of other horses and usually specific buddies. Horses
will try to join or at least hang out with nearby horses even if a fence separates them. Not
all horses get along. It is often necessary to separate mares from geldings and certain in-
