S afe, secure facilities minimize risk and liability for both you and your horses. An estimated
forty thousand horses are stolen each year. It is essential that you be able to prove identity
and ownership of each of your horses in the event of theft or escape. You can further protect
yourself from loss by having insurance appropriate for your situation.
Follow safe practices, maintain safe fences, and keep necessary paperwork in order.
• Loose horses that leave your property can cause damage and traffic accidents that could
prove to be your liability. Install a secure perimeter fence around the portion of the property
where horses are contained. That way, if a horse gets out of a pen or the barn, there will be a
fence to prevent him from leaving the property. Make sure all gates in your perimeter fence
are closed at all times to prevent horses from leaving your property. Consider using locks on
all perimeter gates.
