Loading fresh manure onto a spreader for immediate application to land is suitable
only for farms with large tracts of cropland or pastures not grazed by horses.
Horse manure loses 50 percent of its bulk by composting.
Although few problems are encountered when applying fresh horse manure to estab-
lished grass pastures, fresh horse manure should never be applied to a newly seeded hay
field or pasture or to a garden or newly planted trees, since it can burn plant tissues. If it
will be used in these or similar situations, horse manure should be composted from 6 to 8
