Commonly recommended distances from compost pile:
• 50′-100′ from property lines
• 100′-200′ from surface water (streams, ponds, wetlands)
• 25′ from drainage ditch or tile that empties into surface water
• 100′-200′ from well or other potable water source
• 200′-500′ from house or office

and downhill from them to make moving full carts easier.
Place compost pile downwind from house, office, and barn.
Use shrubs or trees to block view of compost from your house, neighbors, or the
public roadway.
If excess phosphorus runs off the land during rainfall or snowmelt and settles in your
pond or lake, it can lead to eutrophication. This is a process whereby excess nutrients in
water cause excessive and unhealthy aquatic plant growth, particularly of algae.
