In-Depth Information
I chop a hole in the ice on the creek once or twice a day during winter to ensure that
horses on pasture can get a drink.
Buckets work best in stalls if they are mounted with a bucket bracket, which prevents the
bucket from being tipped over by the horse. Freeze-proof buckets can also be used. Auto-
matic (heated, if necessary) waterers can be shared between two stalls, two paddocks, or
two pastures. Provide plenty of waterers so that all horses have the opportunity to drink an
unlimited amount of pure, fresh water. (See Hill, Stablekeeping [Storey, 2000], for more
detailed information on waterers.)
