In-Depth Information
very hard water with a hardness score of 10.5 grains or more per gallon. At those rates,
the 4-pound box available in most grocery stores goes a long way. Store the box of sodium
hexametaphosphate granules in a cool, dry place and mix as needed.
Watering Devices
If you are putting in hydrants in a temperate climate, be sure they are the freeze-proof, self-
draining type and located where they are not accessible to horses. Drain and roll up hoses
after each use. Troughs are fine if you have a large number of horses, but if just one or two
horses are drinking from a trough, the water could become stagnant. Clean troughs regu-
larly. If troughs are to be used in the winter in temperate climates, they can be insulated and
kept from freezing with a caged tank heater. Otherwise, you'll need to check the troughs at
least twice a day for freezing and break the surface ice if necessary. Waterers made from
plastic barrels that held a non-toxic substance (such as vanilla or vinegar) hold about 35 to
40 gallons, which is suitable for a single horse pen.
