In-Depth Information
The boards for the round pen walls can be rough cut or planed, green or dried, treated or
not. The cheapest boards are usually untreated rough-cut wood. Although rough-cut lum-
ber has the advantage of being stronger, it can also be a source of splinters, and it soaks
up more paint or preservative than planed wood. A “2-inch” planed board is actually only
about 1½ inches thick. Green lumber can shrink or warp after you have nailed it into place,
while dried lumber should retain the straightness it had when purchased. Treated lumber
resists rotting, but not sunlight, and adds more cost.
