In-Depth Information
My 66′ diameter round pen has walls that slant out about 8 degrees. Four 2x8 pine
boards are nailed on the inside of 8″ diameter treated posts. The posts are 10′ long
and set 3½′ into the ground. Sand footing is held in by railroad ties cut to fit between
the posts.
Cut both ends of twenty-nine of the 8-foot railroad ties at about a 70-degree angle so
they wedge between the bases of the posts to hold the sand in the pen. Placing the 6-inch
side of the ties on the ground allows the 8-inch side to act as the most effective sand barrier.
The ties should be wedged in from the inside of the pen and should be flush with the inside
surface of the posts. You might want to stack a second railroad tie on top of the ground tie
to further prevent footing from being pushed out of the pen at the rail.
