Round Pen
One of the most valuable pens you can have is a safely constructed round pen. Besides
providing a good place to turn out horses for exercise, a round pen is ideal for conducting
training lessons such as sacking out, longeing, ground driving, saddling, ponying, first
rides, and rider longe lessons. Also, trained horses can be tuned up and conditioned using
work in repetitive circles. What follow are some round-pen specifics that have worked well
for me.
SIZE
The size and construction of a round pen depend somewhat on its intended uses. A starting
pen that is built solely for initial gentling and first rides might be best at 35 feet in diameter
