Caution
Often the actual opening of the bow gates incorporated into panels is much narrower
than indicated. The opening of a so-called 4-foot gate in reality could be as narrow as
40 inches, a space pretty cramped for leading a hefty, blanketed, or saddled Quarter
Horse through. And even though many wheelbarrows or manure carts might fit
through a 40-inch opening, a 48-inch space would make it easier to do so without
bumping wheel hubs.
A 4-foot gate (with full 48-inch opening) with at least a 7-foot head clearance
provides a safe passage for blanketed horses and manure carts. A 6-foot-wide gate
with 9-foot head clearance is necessary for leading a saddled horse through or for
safely using as a ride-through gate.
