In-Depth Information
Sassy and I patrol the perimeter fence looking for deer damage. Riding the fence is
especially important if you run electric fence.
Make a simple kit you can carry with you. Include a hammer, fence pliers, some spare
insulators, staples, and fence wire.
Look for worn or weathered materials, protruding nails, loose wires, rails that have been
broken or dislodged from the poles, leaning or loose posts, places where the fence might be
sagging and need to be tightened, or signs of chewing. Check along road fences for litter
such as cans, bottles, and items blown out of vehicles. Walking or riding the boundaries
of your paddocks and pastures every day will also allow you to assess whether the land is
being overgrazed or if it needs other attention.
