Riding Fence
On the large cattle ranches of the West, one ongoing task is checking the fence. Although
you may not need to saddle up for this job, take advantage of the opportunity and include a
fence check in your daily routine. Making small repairs often avoids larger problems later.
When using electric fencing, find shorts or breaks before batteries are drained or the horses
find out the fence is not working. In deer and elk country, this means twice a day, because
these animals frequently break electric fencing when going over or through fences. Check-
ing electric fences at dawn or dusk might enable you to hear and see sparks caused by
arcing short circuits. During snowy weather, electric fences can become inoperable until
the ice and snow melt or are brushed off the wires and charger.
