In-Depth Information
Properly installed with in-line stretchers and tension springs, it can be stretched to with-
stand 200,000 pounds of pressure per square inch. This means it is strong, but also that if a
horse collides with it or gets tangled in it (if the fence was not maintained), the fence will
likely not break and the horse will be injured. Not a highly visible fence, it is most suitable
for large pastures or rangeland. Fence flags or ribbons can increase visibility. One or more
of the wires can be installed with insulators and be electrified to prevent rubbing. Closer
post spacing increases visibility and decreases risk from entanglement.
Coated-Wire Fence
Compared to standard high-tensile fence wire, coated 12.5-, 14.5-, and 16-gauge plastic
coated wire is more attractive, safer, and more visible. Cost can be up to ten times greater
than for standard high-tensile wire, but post spacing can be farther apart due to increased
visibility.
High-Tension Wire-Rail Fence
This plastic fence is one of the safest, most attractive, and most expensive fencing options.
It is from 2 to 5 inches wide and looks like a wooden board fence from a distance. It has
two or three 12.5-gauge wires embedded in the plastic, so the fence can be stretched under
high tension. It requires no paint. It flexes rather than breaks on impact and therefore tends
to have a lower risk of injury. Post spacing of up to 12 feet is common because of the high
visibility of the rails. This type of fence requires well-braced ends that take time to build
properly.
