In-Depth Information
Roll of two-strand smooth-wire (aka barbless) cable.
WIRE FENCE
Wire fences include smooth-wire and mesh fencing. Wire fences have a galvanized (zinc)
coating to delay rusting. The thickness of the coating determines the length of time the
fence is able to resist the corrosive effects of the weather. Class 1 indicates the lightest coat-
ing of zinc, Class 3 the heaviest. Class 3, with two to three times the zinc coating as Class
1, can last 5 to 10 years longer, a feature especially important in humid climates where rust-
ing is a problem.
Smooth-Wire Fence
Smooth wire is also called twisted barbless cable because it is like barbed wire but without
the barbs. Smooth wire is economical, especially for large pastures, and when properly in-
stalled and maintained, it is a safe horse fence.
Mesh Fence
Mesh fence consists of crisscrossed wires fastened together to make a large screen. It is
usually 4 to 5 feet high and comes in rolls 20 rods (330 feet) long.
