In-Depth Information
ive, PVC fencing has elastic action and is highly visible, so tends to result in fewer injur-
ies and veterinary bills than many other types of fencing. Another advantage is that horses
don't generally chew PVC. Today's PVC is highly resistant to ultraviolet rays. In humid
climates it might be necessary to periodically wash it with mildew-removing agents.
POLYETHYLENE-, PVC-, OR VINYL-COATED WOOD FENCE
Planks and square wooden posts covered with synthetic sheathing are available in the tradi-
tional horse-farm white as well as brown and black. The ends of the boards and posts have
protective caps to prevent moisture from getting into the wood. This fence requires very
little maintenance; is attractive, durable, safe, and highly visible; and deters chewing. It is
also quite expensive.
PIPE FENCE
Steel pipe makes a very strong, safe horse fence, particularly good for pens and runs, and
needs little maintenance, especially if rustproof metal or paint is used. Pipe posts must be
set in concrete. Often 2-inch drill-stem pipe is used for the top and bottom rails with three
or four strands of cable or sucker rod in between. Pipe rails can be 20 feet long with posts
set 8 to 10 feet apart.
Pipe fence offers little flexibility, however. It looks very businesslike, but some feel it
lacks the aesthetically pleasing appearance of other types of horse fencing. Materials can
be expensive, unless you are located near an oil field, where the 2-inch drill-stem pipe and
sucker rod are available as salvage. A cutting torch, a portable welding unit, and someone
to operate them are also needed.
CONTINUOUS FENCE
Continuous fence is made of tubular steel, which makes a tidy, safe, low-maintenance horse
fence; it is most similar to the portable horse panels that are discussed at the end of this
chapter. You can purchase components in various pipe diameters and choose the number of
rails and spacing. Generally, the posts are set about 10 feet apart, and the pipes or bars are
attached to the posts via metal clips. Depending on the manufacturer, you can choose from
various types of pipe, posts, and connectors, and the materials can come painted or you can
paint them after installation. Sometimes called estate fencing, continuous fence is custom
fence that requires no welding.
